Helping managers performance manage more effectively within Argos distribution centres
Following the opening of a new Central Distribution Centre (CDC) in Barton-under-Needwood, Staffordshire, Argos identified a requirement for a Welcome Day that would give the new team members an overview of Argos in a fun way, and begin to embed the desired culture for Barton CDC. There was also a requirement for a programme that would combine on-the-job training with workshops to instruct new team members in every part of their new role.
The solutions developed by Training for Advancement incorporated:
- a Welcome Day and workshops that were highly interactive and full of activities, games and information
- 2 x 1-day workshops for the management team responsible for delivering the programme
- a series of Activity Cards for each role (Goods In, Despatch, Tote Fill, Order Distribution System, Stock Recall and Returns) that combined the tasks to be learned in order to complete the job, and a focus on the implications that these tasks have on customers and fellow team members’ safety
- Coaching Cards to run in conjunction with the Activity Cards, enabling the internal coaches to instruct the new team members and pass on consistent messages throughout the company regarding the procedures and standards expected.
All solutions included elements to reinforce the Barton aim, culture and values.
The materials have been highly acclaimed within the business, and went on to be used as a basis for standardising Induction across the whole of the Distribution function.
